The defending National Champion Phoenix College men's soccer team will face a major test on Thursday, March 5 at 7 p.m. when the Bears travel across town to take on Division I Grand Canyon University.
The matchup adds another layer of excitement as GCU features three current players who previously wore a Phoenix College uniform: midfielder Martin Luala, forward Michael Watkins, and forward Richard Tabares Ochoa.
Luala, a Phoenix native and Washington High School product, played at Phoenix College before transferring to GCU as a junior for the 2025 season. He was later selected 28th overall by San Diego FC in the 2026 MLS SuperDraft, highlighting the level of talent developed within the Bears program.
Watkins, a Goodyear native, transferred to GCU for the 2025 season after earning NJCAA Second Team All-American honors during his time at Phoenix College. Tabares Ochoa also made the move from PC to GCU, continuing the strong connection between the two programs.
Phoenix College enters the match riding the momentum of its national championship run, bringing high-level experience and Division I-caliber talent of its own onto the pitch. The Bears' roster features multiple players capable of competing at the highest level, setting the stage for a competitive and entertaining matchup.
GCU is coming off a strong season as well, recently celebrating a conference championship and a run to the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16.
With former teammates on opposite sidelines, Division I talent throughout both lineups, and championship pedigree in play, Thursday night's contest promises to be an exciting showdown between two premier programs.
