PHOENIX, Ariz. – The No. 15 Phoenix College Bears faced a tough test on the road, dropping both games of a doubleheader to No. 13 South Mountain Community College on April 7.

In game one, the Bears battled throughout but ultimately fell 7-5 in a competitive contest. Phoenix College struck early, plating a run in the first inning, and stayed within striking distance behind consistent offensive production. Katelyn Larney led the way with two hits and an RBI, while Olivia Deford added two hits and drove in a run. Hope Hutchins and Mckayla Ethington also contributed RBI for the Bears.

Phoenix College regained momentum in the sixth inning, scoring three runs to close the gap, but South Mountain responded with a big fifth inning earlier in the game that proved to be the difference. In the circle, Gianna Baca got the start, allowing two runs over four innings, while Aubree Lovo took the loss in relief.

Game two saw the Bears jump out early with two runs in the second inning, but South Mountain answered and pulled away late for an 8-2 victory.

Piper Mills led the Bears offensively with two hits and an RBI, while Eva Issitt added a run driven in. Olivia Deford continued her strong performance at the plate, going 2-for-2 and reaching base four times. Taylor Borup also contributed with two hits.

Despite early momentum, South Mountain capitalized in the middle innings, using timely hitting to take control of the game.

Phoenix College totaled 17 hits across the doubleheader but was unable to contain South Mountain's offense in key moments.

The Bears will look to regroup as they continue conference play and push toward postseason positioning.
